The 1992 debut of Honda’s world-changing CBR900RR Fireblade completely rewrote the design book of supersport motorcycles, introducing a remarkably compact and lightweight configuration.
With relatively tiny proportions and an unprecedented power-to-weight ratio, the Fireblade embodied the origin of the modern supersport motorcycle.
In 2012, the iconic machine celebrated its 20th anniversary with a the new model, which maintains the original’s ethos of ‘total control’, a philosophy that has been continually refined and evolved during those 20 years.
Two years later another chapter was written in the remarkable Fireblade story with the introduction of the SP – the sharpest and most refined version since that original launch 23 years ago.
The street version of 2014 Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade SP focused on track action – a great starting point for the Honda World Superbike team. It featured Ohlins front and rear suspension, Brembo mono block front brake calipers and a single seat unit.
It shared the standard CBR1000RR’s uprated cylinder head and power boost, plus factory-matched engine internals, with frame revisions and new top and bottom yokes to suit. Standard fitment of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres were the finishing touch.
The 999.8cc inline four-cylinder engine received the same updated cylinder head as the standard 2014 CBR1000RR Fireblade, with improved inlet/exhaust gas flow and combustion efficiency, and the extra 2kW peak power boost. However it featured factory-matched pistons and con-rods, to ensure optimum internal balance.
As a track-focused machine the Fireblade SP offers no provision for a pillion and a sleek single seat unit saves weight. Further marking the SP version out from standard is its own unique tricolour paint – black, white and red, with the Honda logo well visible on the fairings.
The racing version of Honda’s flagship machine, the CBR1000RR Fireblade SP goes into 2016 subject to another dose of slightly revised World Superbike technical regulations. With 2006 MotoGP Champion Nicky Hayden and 2014 World Supersport Michael van der Mark on board, it’s sure to be at the sharp end once more…
